Poker is a card game in which players wager money against one another. The game can be played with any number of players, but it is most commonly played between 6 and 14 people at a table. Each player places chips into the pot, or betting pool, before being dealt cards. The players then compete to make the highest five-card hand possible. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
In most poker games players must ante some amount (the exact amount varies by game; our games are typically a nickel). The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals each player one card at a time, beginning with the player to his or her immediate right. After the deal, the first of several betting intervals begins. During each betting interval the players may call the bet, raise it, or fold their hands.
If a player has a good starting hand like two pair or higher, he should raise before the flop to put pressure on his opponents. If he doesn’t have a good hand he should call the bet or fold, depending on the situation.
